I’ve been using _s, or underscores, by Automattic, as my starter theme for over a year now. It’s about as bare bones as a theme gets and I like that. The one issue I’ve encountered, though, is using it as a base for online stores. Well, that’s changed. Underscores now has WooCommerce support built in! I just noticed this recently. From looking at the commits on Github, WooCommerce was first added on August 1 of this year.

I’ve already begun using it on several sites and it’s working great. Even if you’re not using underscores take a peek at the code. It’s a great way to learn how to integrate WooCommerce into your base theme if it doesn’t support it.

If you prefer a theme with more bells and whistles checkout Storefront, the official WooCommerce theme. It’s also based on underscores but offers you a lot more out of the box. I haven’t had a chance to dig into it yet, but hope to soon.
